When Winona said she wanted to room with her, Nikita was a little puzzled. "Why aren't you staying with Yulen?"
“You just had surgery a little while ago,” Winona explained. “I’m worried about you, so I’d rather stay with you tonight.”
Nikita laughed. "I'm fully recovered. Are you sure Yulen won’t mind you staying with an old woman like me?"
"He probably has work to do tonight, so it would be inconvenient for me to stay with him anyway," Winona said as she unpacked. "Please, Grandma, just let me stay with you."
Nikita didn't overthink it, just offered a few more words of advice on being a good, devoted wife.
That evening, the group went to the restaurant for the buffet. Yulen helped by getting fruit and drinks for everyone.
“Yulen is such a good man,” Nikita said to Winona. "He comes from a good family, has wonderful manners, and he's so attentive. Winona, you need to treat him better. I see how busy you are with work every day; how can you find time to take care of the house and try for a baby? Why don't you just quit that job?"
Helena, sitting nearby, couldn't help but chime in. "Mom, her job gives her independence. Why are you telling her to quit?"
"You're a cautionary tale!" Nikita retorted. "You cared so much about your career you nearly wrecked your whole family. Is your paycheck really more important than a stable home?"
Helena rolled her eyes. The old woman was set in her ways; nothing she said would change her mind.
Yulen returned with a plate of fruit, a polite smile on his face. "What were you all talking about?"
Nikita’s approval of Yulen grew every time she looked at him. "We were just wondering when you two are going to have children. You've been married for five years; it's time to get a move on."
Yulen glanced at Winona with a gentle expression. "We’re not forcing it. I don’t want to put too much pressure on her."
Winona didn't even spare him a glance. He already had a child with Tallulah; what was the point of this act?
Just then, Tallulah entered the restaurant. Her eyes quickly found Yulen, and she walked over.
On the way to the convenience store, Helena asked, "That Tallulah and Yulen… are they…?"
Winona, surprised by Helena's sharpness, saw no reason to hide it and simply nodded.
Helena's eyes reddened with anger. "How could he? When he first got together with you, he swore you’d be the only one. It’s only been five years, and he already has another woman?"
Winona had long since stopped caring about Yulen. She said softly, "Aunt Helena, I'll handle this. Please don't tell my grandmother yet. I'm afraid the shock would be too much for her."
Helena knew that while Winona appeared gentle on the surface, she had a strong will. If she interfered, it would likely backfire and upset Winona.
After a moment of silence, she said, "No matter what you decide to do, I support you."
Helena had a husband and children, which made divorce a complicated option for her. But Winona was different. She was still young, with no children. Starting over would be easier for her.
