"What are you implying, Sutton?" Fitch snapped, his face flushed with anger. "When have I ever played favorites? I'm thinking of the hotel's reputation! We're a five-star establishment!"
Before the argument could escalate, the hotel's General Manager, Mr. Charlton, intervened sharply. "Enough! Arguing in the main lobby? Have you lost all sense of professionalism?"
Charlton turned to Stefan, looking deeply apologetic. "Mr. Goddard, this is a failure in my management. I'll review the situation immediately, and I'll have that discriminatory playground rule revoked right away."
"Suspend Fitch for six months," Stefan ordered, his voice devoid of emotion.
Charlton froze. Stefan rarely micromanaged the day-to-day personnel issues of the properties under his umbrella. For him to directly order a suspension meant he was profoundly displeased.
Panic seized Fitch. He opened his mouth to beg for leniency, but a sharp glare from Charlton silenced him. He stood there, mute and trembling.
The nanny looked bewildered. Wasn't Mr. Zeller supposed to kick that woman and the little girl out? Why was he the one getting suspended?
Hayden didn't understand corporate politics, but he grasped one thing: his dad wasn't the boss anymore. Did that mean he couldn't play here? He burst into terrified tears.
Ignoring them, Stefan walked over to Helena and Greta. "Helena, Greta, what happened here?"
Helena pointed at the nanny and Hayden. "That boy bullied Greta. When I tried to stand up for her, they threatened to have me thrown out."
Stefan shot a frigid glare at Fitch.
But Hayden just glared at Greta and Helena through his tears, stubbornly sealing his lips.
No matter how much Fitch pleaded with him in hushed tones, the boy refused. Finally, Fitch pulled out his last resort. "If you don't apologize right now, I'm sending you to your grandparents' house tomorrow."
Hayden was thoroughly spoiled by everyone—except his maternal grandparents, who ran a tight ship. He was terrified of visiting them. The threat worked instantly. The crying stopped, his head drooped, and he mumbled, "I'm sorry."
Greta had been fuming, but seeing the boy apologize and his father lose his job made her anger evaporate.
Helena decided to let it go. Fitch was already suspended; pushing the issue would just make them look vindictive. With Winona and Stefan's relationship getting serious, she didn't want any rumors spreading that Winona's family was using his status to bully the staff. She had to think of Winona's future.
