Winona grabbed a quick lunch in the cafeteria before heading straight to the security room.
Pulling up the surveillance footage from the front entrance, she watched a delivery driver place her food on the pickup shelf. A moment later, another figure wearing a delivery jacket walked up, swiped her order, and replaced it with a different bag.
She recognized the silhouette immediately.
Zooming in, the confirmation made her scoff. It was Karina Shepherd.
Winona shook her head in disbelief, a dry laugh escaping her lips. She had a full afternoon of work ahead of her and zero time to entertain Karina’s petty high school antics.
It wasn't until she clocked out for the day that she finally pulled out her phone and dialed the number.
"Karina. You swapped my lunch, didn't you?"
Karina clearly hadn't expected to be caught so quickly, but she leaned into it with smug satisfaction. "So what if I did? I told you, as long as I’m in Riverton, I’m going to make your life a living hell. You won’t eat in peace, and you won’t sleep in peace. The only way I stop is if you leave Stefan and Forrest alone."
Winona’s tone remained deadpan. "Meet me in the first-floor reception room of my office building tonight. We need to talk."
"Whatever you have to say, you can say it over the phone," Karina retorted, instantly suspicious.
"If you show up, I'll tell you the truth about my relationship with Forrest Kane," Winona countered smoothly. "Don't you want to know how we really met?"
Silence hung on the line as Karina took the bait.
If she could just record Winona confessing to something scandalous, she could send the audio straight to Stefan. That would ruin her for good.
"Why your office?" Karina asked, trying to sound nonchalant. "Why not a café?"
"Because I’m working late. Take it or leave it."
Without waiting for a response, Winona hung up.
Fuming, Karina called her number, but it went straight to voicemail.
She marched over to the elevators and rode up to Winona’s floor, only to find the heavy glass double doors padlocked shut for the night.
She stood in the empty hallway, stomping her foot in pure, unfiltered rage.
Winona had played her!
Spinning around to leave, she barely made it to the elevator bank before two massive security guards lunged out of the shadows, pinning her arms behind her back.
"That’s her! The girl who stole the food earlier today!" one of the younger guards shouted. "She’s been loitering downstairs for two hours waiting for the building to empty out so she could steal more stuff. Good thing we caught her."
Karina thrashed wildly, screaming at the top of her lungs. "Let me go! I’m not a thief, you idiots!"
The security chief stepped forward, his expression hard. "Last week, an entire floor’s worth of lunches and office snacks got swiped. We know the cops won't do anything but slap your wrist, which is why you people get so bold. But we're going to give you a warning you won't forget. If you ever come back here, it's going to be a lot worse."
