Giselle was convinced that if Wynne just showed her face, Sylvan would be so overjoyed that he’d immediately grant her whatever she wanted at the institute.
Wynne’s voice came through the receiver, crisp and freezing cold. "I told you, his affairs have absolutely nothing to do with me. Do not bring him up to me again."
Giselle panicked. Why was this woman so impossibly stubborn?
She was supposed to be her long-lost daughter. Couldn't Wynne just swallow her pride for five minutes to do her a favor?
Since playing nice wasn't working, Giselle decided to apply pressure.
"Mom, he’s so pitiful sitting in that sterile room all alone. It breaks my heart. I’m doing my best, but I can’t cheer him up on my own. If you don’t come visit him, I’m not coming home tonight either."
The emotional blackmail bounced right off.
Wynne wasn't an idiot. She instantly surmised that Giselle was only playing the devoted daughter because she wanted to extract a favor from the old man.
"Giselle," Wynne said sharply. "Stay out of adult matters that don't concern you."
The line went dead.
Giselle stared at her phone in shock. She had literally threatened to not come home, and Wynne hadn't even blinked. Just how deeply did this woman hate Sylvan Scully? He must have done something unforgivable to her back in the day.
But more importantly, Giselle felt a sting of genuine resentment. She had been slaving away in this miserable hospital for a week, and Wynne didn't seem to care about her well-being at all. Maybe her 'mother' didn't actually love her that much after all.
A harsh coughing fit echoed from the hospital room. Swallowing her disgust, Giselle plastered on a fake smile and hurried back inside.

Winona just smirked. They were cautious now, but arrogance always led to mistakes. Sooner or later, they would slip up and reveal their true IP.
Watching her devour her second plate of pickled cucumbers, Killian raised an eyebrow. "I don't think I've ever seen you eat cucumbers before, Winona. You’re practically inhaling them lately."
Winona didn't miss a beat. "It’s been so hot lately. I just felt like having something tangy to wake up my appetite."
Since getting pregnant, her cravings for sour foods had skyrocketed, but she wasn't ready to share the news with her colleagues just yet.
After lunch, Winona unwrapped a small artisanal candied citrus peel and popped it into her mouth.
Intrigued by the sleek packaging, Killian asked if he could try one. The burst of bright, perfectly balanced flavor caught him off guard. "Wow, that’s incredible. What brand is this? Where did you get it?"
