The cat had already fallen asleep. Winona didn't have the heart to wake it. Her voice remained low, yet it carried an unquestionable coldness. "Even if you didn't lie to me, even if you never got together with Tallulah, we were destined to fall apart. Because you don't have the slightest idea how to love someone, Yulen. I'm not some pet canary you can keep in a gilded cage. I know you keep showing up, trying to lure me back into that prison, but I'm not the same woman I used to be. Your cage holds absolutely no appeal to me anymore."
Yulen clenched his jaw. "You say the home I gave you was a gilded cage. What about Stefan? How is he any different? If you can accept him, why can't you accept me? At the very least, I can swear to you that aside from my physical loyalty, my love will only ever belong to you."
Winona scoffed at his promise. She offered a mocking smile. "Then your love really isn't worth much. Stefan is leagues ahead of you."
Her words felt like a physical stab to his heart.
Winona's phone rang. She held the kitten with one arm and answered with her free hand. "Stefan."
Unlike the absolute zero temperature she directed at Yulen, her tone on the phone was incredibly soft, her eyes brimming with unconcealed affection.
Yulen stood there watching her, his chest heaving with suffocating emotion, his eyes turning red.
"I'll be back soon."
Without so much as another glance at Yulen, she carried the tabby cat and got into her car.
Watching her silhouette disappear from his sight, Yulen was overwhelmed by a crushing sense of defeat. He pulled out his phone and, out of sheer habit, dialed Giselle to ask her out for drinks.
Giselle, who was currently at the hospital looking after Sylvan Scully, rejected him flat out. "Sorry, Yulen. I'm totally booked up right now."
Yulen didn't even bother asking what she was busy with. He simply muttered an acknowledgment and hung up.
"Perfect," Stefan replied, his eyes softening. "I don't have much experience with cats, though. I might need a crash course."
"Cats are way easier than dogs," Winona told him. "You don't need to walk them, and you don't have to potty train them. They figure it out on their own."
Stefan chuckled. "Well, that already makes her smarter than Biscuit."
Hearing his name, Biscuit let out an indignant whine.
Winona wasn't sure if Ezra Vane had already reported her run-in with Yulen at the gates, but she decided it was best to come clean immediately.
"I saw Yulen at the entrance to the neighborhood just now."
