The Wife He Forgot to Marry (Winona and Yule) novel Chapter 668

After her meetings wrapped up, Winona finally sat back at her desk and turned her attention to the Yvonne situation.

She pulled out her phone and texted Stein to ask if he was aware of what had happened.

Stein immediately called her back, sounding incredibly apologetic. "I am so sorry, Winona. My private life should never have bled into yours. I recently asked my wife for a divorce, and now she's convinced I'm cheating. She's paranoid about every woman around me. We probably spent a bit too long discussing academics at that dinner, and she jumped to conclusions."

Recalling how impeccably dressed Yvonne had been while trying to 'catch a cheater,' Winona sensed she wasn't normally an erratic person. "Mr. Harrison, did you cheat on her?" she asked bluntly.

She had no intention of being a scapegoat for someone else's mess.

Stein cleared his throat. "Of course not. I'm not that kind of man. We've known each other since college. Even if the romance is dead, I still care about her as family. I would never betray her. I asked for a divorce because we simply have nothing in common anymore. Coming home feels suffocating.

"A marriage built on obligation is torture for both of us, so I thought it was best to end it. I offered to leave the marriage with nothing—I told her she could have all the money in my accounts—but she refused and accused me of cheating. I honestly don't understand how her mind works."

Winona was quiet for a moment before hanging up.

Getting married young out of passion, then deciding your stay-at-home wife has 'nothing in common' with you once you hit middle-age success... It sounded like a perfectly reasonable excuse for a divorce, but at its core, it was profoundly selfish.

If he felt they lacked common ground, he should have communicated with her and encouraged her to return to the workforce.

With his connections, finding Yvonne a position in a lab wouldn't have been hard.

And since their kids were older, they could have easily hired help for the house. There was no need to trap her in a domestic cage for years.
