"If she's so innocent, why was she texting Stein last night?"
Reading Winona's text the night before had only fueled Yvonne's rage; to her, it just read like an arrogant mistress making excuses.
Wynne bit back her temper.
Her beautiful, brilliant girl would never stoop to chasing some married, middle-aged man.
"Mrs. Harrison, can I ask who told you they were having an affair? Because I strongly believe someone is playing you."
Yvonne stubbornly refused to name her informant.
"That’s none of your business."
The girl had tried to help her. If Yvonne threw her under the bus, what kind of person would she be?
Wynne was losing patience.
"Mrs. Harrison, if you're going to blindly trust this person's gossip, you must have hard proof. You're trying to ruin a woman's career over a single dinner party conversation. Don't you think that's a bit naive?"
Yvonne sneered. "If I had hotel receipts, I would have destroyed them both by now! I wouldn't be playing nice. Mrs. Powell, you have no idea what it's like to suffer in a broken marriage. You don't know the agony of betrayal. So stop acting so superior."
Wynne's eyes went cold as memories of her own past surfaced. "Who says I haven't? I suffered through worse than you are right now. My ex-husband cheated on me while I was pregnant, and my baby went missing right after she was born. But I survived it, and I rebuilt my life. Mrs. Harrison, I despise homewreckers more than you ever could. If Winona were that kind of woman, I wouldn't let her anywhere near me."
Yvonne's defensive posture crumbled.
Shared trauma was a universal language, instantly bridging the gap between them.
She let out a heavy sigh. "Since you're willing to vouch for her character so fiercely, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt for now. But I still can't give you the name of the person who told me. I don't want her career ruined over a misunderstanding. She was genuinely trying to look out for me. I know she was."
Wynne hid her disappointment.
