Tallulah nodded shyly.
It was the first time Eloise had ever seen such a massive gemstone ring, and she couldn't help but say with envy, "Your husband is so generous!"
The other single women at the table glanced over, openly impressed. As researchers, they didn’t exactly have wide social circles, and meeting eligible rich men wasn’t easy.
One of them couldn’t help asking, “How did you end up with a husband who treats you so well?”
Tallulah basked in the attention. "Well," she said with a smile, "I’m not sure what to say. Our families introduced us."
Daphne suddenly cut in. “Tallulah’s not the type to throw herself at men. But if any of you want tips, ask Winona. I’ve known her for a while. She comes from a pretty ordinary background, but she’s definitely good at getting rich men interested. I heard she was a wealthy man's girlfriend for a while, and that’s how she got hired at our company.”
Everyone turned to Winona in shock. They all caught Daphne’s implication—she wasn’t calling Winona a girlfriend so much as a sugar baby.
Winona was stunned that Daphne would twist the facts so maliciously in front of their colleagues.
Eloise’s low opinion of Winona only hardened. To her, Winona had joined the lab just to pad her résumé and hook someone even richer. It reminded her of another pretty girl who had joined their lab, did mediocre work, but masterfully curated a 'brilliant, sophisticated beauty' persona on social media. In less than a year, she married a rich man and quit.
Seeing Winona as the same type, Eloise couldn't help but mock her. "Winona, I didn't realize you were so capable. Should we be expecting a wedding invitation from you soon?"
Winona knew Eloise wasn't the brightest, but she hadn't realized she was foolish enough to let herself be used as someone else's weapon.
Ignoring Eloise, she looked directly at Tallulah. "Do you dare ask your husband to come here, right now, and publicly acknowledge you as Mrs. Locke?"
Everyone was baffled by the question.
Her demeanor instantly shifted to one of sweet affection. "Honey, you were looking for me?" she cooed. "...Mhm, I'm out with some friends. Can you come pick me up? ...Thank you, darling."
Hanging up, she smiled at the group. "My husband just happened to be at a business dinner nearby. He said he'll come get me when he's done."
Daphne immediately adopted an envious tone, laying on the flattery for Tallulah while simultaneously accusing Winona of being a manipulative troublemaker.
Winona ignored them and continued sipping her juice.
By the time the gathering ended, it was ten-thirty. Tallulah spotted Yulen’s car and walked over with a bright smile. He got out and opened the door for her.
Seeing how handsome and polished he was, Eloise and the others couldn’t help looking on in envy.
