The next morning, Stefan was just getting out of bed to start breakfast when the doorbell rang. He opened the door to find Wynne standing there.
"I brought you two breakfast," she announced brightly.
Stefan smiled warmly and stepped aside to let her in. "Mom, you should have slept in."
Since he and Winona were officially married, the change in title came naturally to him.
Wynne beamed. "I'm not tired at all. Making breakfast for you two makes me happy." For years, her only dream had been to find her children and care for them. Now that her dream was a reality, she had energy to spare. She still had to drop off breakfast for Forrest at Riverton University later.
Hearing the commotion, Winona padded out of the bedroom. Both Stefan and Wynne immediately noticed she was barefoot and, in total sync, rushed to grab her slippers.
Winona couldn't help but laugh. She had spent her whole life being fiercely independent, but between these two, she was practically being babied.
After breakfast, Winona got ready for work. Wynne walked her downstairs and watched her get into the car. "Can I bring you lunch today?" she asked hopefully.
It was only her first day living across the hall, and she was already eager to drop off food. Knowing how much it meant to her, Winona nodded with a smile. "Sure."
Wynne's eyes crinkled with joy. "Don't worry, I won't come up to your office. I know people your age hate being treated like Mama's Girls. I won't embarrass you."
At noon, Winona received a text and headed downstairs to find her mother's car waiting. She slid into the passenger seat, and Wynne handed over an insulated lunchbox and a bottle of fresh-squeezed juice.
"Thank you," Winona said, taking the food.
Wynne affectionately patted her head. "Make sure you eat well. I'll let you enjoy your break."
