Willow figured that holding a grudge wasn't practical, so she swallowed her pride to beg for peace, hoping Winona would have a soft heart.
Winona found the woman's rapid change in attitude deeply pathetic.
She let out a dry, dismissive laugh. "'Family?' That's rich. Do you honestly think I'm the type of person who gets slapped in the face and turns around to smile and play nice? Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not that forgiving."
Without another word, Winona turned and walked away.
Panicking, Willow rushed forward to grab her arm. Just then, a delivery courier on a scooter sped past, nearly clipping her. Startled, Willow stumbled backward. Her heel snapped, and she crashed hard onto the pavement, a sharp bolt of agonizing pain shooting up her tailbone.
Her face drained of color. "Winona!" she cried out, reaching a hand toward her. "Help me up!"
Winona glanced back over her shoulder. Seeing the woman sprawled on the concrete, she didn't take a single step toward her. Instead, she looked at Ezra. "Tell Waldo to get her up. Her car should be parked nearby. Just put her in it."
Ezra nodded and waved Waldo over.
Willow stared in shock. She had been Winona's mother-in-law for years, yet the girl was looking at her like she was literal trash on the sidewalk.
Her driver rushed her to the hospital. After a set of X-rays, the doctor informed Willow she had a minor fracture in her tailbone and mandated strict bed rest for the next few days.
If this had happened a few months ago, Willow would have been calling Winona to scream at her. But now, desperate to get back in her good graces, she had to swallow her rage and accept her bad luck.
When Yulen arrived home and heard about the injury, he frowned. "How did you even manage that?"
