"My mom had food poisoning and had her stomach pumped. My dad and the nurse will look after her. I'll head back tonight."
"How did she suddenly get food poisoning?" Winona asked.
"I'm still not entirely sure."
Stefan paused and sighed heavily. "I have no idea if someone set her up, or if she's just using this as a trick to force me to move back to the manor."
"So, what are you going to do?"
"I'm not going to humor her, naturally. We just don't belong under the same roof."
Winona hummed in agreement, reminded him to eat on time, and ended the call.
At noon, Winona had lunch with Karina.
The conversation shifted to Evander Goddard.
Thinking of Evander, a nostalgic look crossed Karina's eyes. "Evander was such an incredibly easygoing guy. Whenever we got into trouble as kids, he was always the one willing to take the blame for everyone. But my aunt has always been obsessed with comparing herself to others. Back then, all the boys from the second and third branches got into prestigious universities and joined the Goddard Group.
"But Evander wanted to be a pilot. My aunt thought he was being rebellious and constantly fought with him. A few times, she even pushed him to the point of being suicidal. But she just claimed he didn't really want to die and was only using it to manipulate her. During that time, I was too terrified to even visit their house."
"Who do you think was right?" Winona asked.
Karina sighed. "I used to think Evander was just too naive. As a boy, wasn't it perfectly normal to inherit the family business? Why be a pilot? I also thought my aunt was working too hard and felt bad for her.
"But my mindset has completely changed now. Evander just wanted to pursue his dream career; he wasn't doing anything wrong. Honestly, all the boys in the Goddard and Shepherd families just follow the adults' orders—what school to attend, what career to pursue, everything is mapped out.
"Evander was crushed just because he had his own ideas. In the grand scheme of things, what does a job title matter? Being alive and happy is the only thing that counts."
Winona was genuinely surprised by her reflection.
She hadn't expected the once-arrogant heiress to have such deep thoughts.
