The Wife He Forgot to Marry (Winona and Yule) novel Chapter 733

At ten o'clock that night, before heading back to Riverton, Stefan stopped by the Goddard Manor to check on his mother.

Margaret immediately launched into a tirade about Winona's lack of respect.

Stefan's brow furrowed in confusion. "You're not her mother. If you want someone to do a spiritual retreat for you, you can ask me, Roxana, or Karina. Why are you dragging Winona into this? You didn't raise her, and she has her own mother to look after. Why should she drop everything for you?"

Margaret choked on her words, then snapped defensively, "What is that supposed to mean? Don't all daughters-in-law respect their in-laws? Look at how I treat the old lady in this house! What, is your woman too precious to do a single thing for me?"

"Violet might not seem overly affectionate with you," Stefan replied coldly, "but she's given you a substantial amount of assets. You took her money, so showing her respect is the bare minimum. What have you ever given Winona? Nothing but coldness and insults. And you still expect her to treat you well?"

Margaret felt utterly defeated. This son of hers was a lost cause; he always sided with outsiders.

She finally broke. "Get out! If you think Winona is so perfect, then go live with her and don't ever come back!"

"I didn't want to come in the first place," Stefan said flatly. "You're the one who keeps faking illnesses and throwing tantrums, forcing me to make the trip. Mom, if you're bored, find a hobby. Stop torturing the family. You might not be tired of it, but I am."

Margaret glared at him, wishing she could wipe him from existence.

Ophelia, who was standing by the doorway, saw Stefan and smiled gently. "Stefan, are you heading back to Riverton? It's so late. Just stay the night and leave tomorrow. I'll have the kitchen make you a late-night snack."

Stefan looked right through her. "You were the one who convinced my mother to ask Winona to do that retreat for her, weren't you?"

He knew his mother.

She had never been the type to immerse herself in spirituality or holistic healing.

Ophelia froze, her expression shifting to one of sheer hurt. "Stefan, how could you say that? I would never say something like that to Margaret."

A layer of frost settled in Stefan's eyes. "Ophelia, cherish everything you have right now. Don't do things you're going to regret."

With that, he turned and walked away.

Ophelia watched him leave, her nails digging so hard into her palms they almost drew blood. Tears welled in her eyes.

Stefan was the heir to the Goddard family. He was born with everything. He could never understand the deep-seated anxiety of an adopted daughter in a wealthy household.
