Winona remembered she still had a work document to revise, so she said goodbye to Wynne and headed back to her own apartment.
Just as she finished her edits, her phone rang. It was Margaret.
"Mrs. Goddard, is there something you need?"
Margaret bristled at her icy tone, but considering what she was about to ask, she forced herself to soften her voice.
"Winona, I want you to do something for me. If you agree, I might consider accepting you."
Winona hadn't expected this sudden shift in attitude.
"What do you want me to do?"
Margaret felt a swell of smugness. She knew Winona would jump at the chance.
Clearly, all that talk about not caring if she was accepted into the Goddard family was just a bluff. Deep down, the girl still craved her future mother-in-law's approval.
"I haven't been feeling well lately. I've seen countless doctors and run every test, but they can't find the cause. I consulted a spiritual master at Glory Monastery, and he said my karmic energy is completely misaligned this year. That's why I'm sick. I need someone to do a week-long spiritual retreat at the monastery to pray for my health and balance the energy."
If Winona agreed to this, Margaret would let her previous disrespect slide.
It was such a simple request. Surely, Winona would say yes, right?
Listening to this, Winona rolled her eyes so hard they almost got stuck.
Did Margaret think they were living in the dark ages?
She wasn't her real mother. Why should she spend a week fasting and meditating for her?
Besides, if you're sick, you go to the hospital. If spiritual cleanses and retreats actually cured illnesses, hospitals would go out of business.
More importantly, she was swamped with work. There was no way she was taking a week off for this nonsense.
