Once Audrey was asleep, Wynne turned to Winona. "Did Margaret try to bully you?"
Winona recounted the conversation at the restaurant.
Wynne let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "She is truly determined to be miserable. She has a perfectly good life, yet she spends all her time trying to torture her own son. Doesn't she realize she's going to end up completely alone?"
Many toxic parents believed that no matter how horribly they treated their children, the kids would never actually abandon them. But they were wrong. Children weren't stupid; they knew exactly who loved them and who used them. The moment they were strong enough to fly, they cut ties with parents like that.
Margaret was so pathologically self-centered, it was no wonder Stefan couldn't stand her.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Winona opened the door and was surprised to see Liana Linden standing there. She hadn't expected the girl to actually track them down.
Liana's hair and coat were soaked from the lingering rain. She looked utterly pathetic. Sighing inwardly, Winona let her in and handed her a dry towel.
Liana murmured a quiet thank you. Once she had dried her hair, she looked up, her eyes pleading. "Ms. Jowett, I heard you have no intention of moving to the Capital. I really hope you can consider my proposal. Stefan and I would only be married on paper. I wouldn't interfere with his life at all. You have no desire to deal with the Goddard family's politics, but I desperately need their protection. We both get what we want. Can't we make this work?"
Winona pressed her lips into a thin line, refusing to entertain the absurdity.
