Wanda quickly chimed in, playing the peacemaker. "Stefan, you've really misunderstood your mother. She came all this way just to spend some quality time with you. It's not good for a family to stay at each other's throats like this. Besides, you and Winona are both so busy with your careers, and Wynne has her husband to look after. You need someone you can trust to help with Audrey, don't you?"
It was a masterfully manipulative speech.
Margaret knew she could never force those kinds of soft, placating words out of her own mouth.
She had brought Wanda along specifically to act as a buffer. She figured if she could just mend her relationship with Stefan, she could slowly wedge her way into his daily life and eventually push Winona out of the picture.
Wynne wasn't born yesterday. She knew exactly what these women were up to, and she wasn't about to let them trample her daughter.
"Wanda, the way you're talking makes it sound like we're incapable of raising a child," Wynne said, her tone dripping with polite venom. "Since the day she was born, Audrey has been perfectly well cared for. In fact, the only time she didn't eat, didn't sleep, cried endlessly, and broke out in a severe allergic reaction... was the time Margaret took her to the Capital. Isn't that right?"
Margaret stiffened, insulted. She was the baby's grandmother! Was Wynne accusing her of intentionally harming the child?
Winona quietly sipped her soup.
With her husband and her mother acting as her personal shields, she didn't even need to say a word. If Margaret wanted to ruin her own night, that was her problem.
Refusing to let his mother ruin their family dinner, Stefan looked at her coldly. "Riverton isn't suited for someone of your status. You should head back to the Capital."
Margaret had genuinely expected that by extending an olive branch, Stefan would at least invite them to sit down. Instead, he was kicking her out.
