When Winona stepped off the elevator that evening, she found Margaret standing right outside her front door, aggressively ringing the doorbell.
Hearing the ding of the elevator, Margaret turned and glared at her. "Working this late? You clearly don't care about Audrey at all. She's a baby. This is when she needs a mother the most."
Winona honestly couldn't comprehend the woman's sheer delusion.
No matter how many times she and Stefan explicitly stated their boundaries, Margaret acted like the rules didn't apply to her. She wielded her title as the elder like a weapon to control them.
"Did you come here to see Audrey?" Winona asked calmly. "Or are you here to pitch Ms. Linden to Stefan again?"
Margaret scoffed. "Why I'm here is none of your business. This is my son's house. Do I need permission to visit? If you don't like it, you can pack your bags and leave."
She had promised Wanda she would play nice with Stefan, but she certainly hadn't promised to play nice with Winona.
Winona unlocked the door and pushed it open. "In that case, I'll be taking Audrey to my own place for the night."
"I walk in, and you immediately run away with the child?" Margaret sneered. "Such a fragile ego."
Ignoring the petty bait, Winona walked inside.
Wynne and the nanny were in the living room, playing with Audrey. The moment Wynne saw Margaret trailing behind her daughter, her warm smile vanished.
"Mom," Winona said, picking up the baby. "Margaret is staying here tonight. Let's head over to the townhouse next door."
She didn't have the legal authority to physically drag Margaret out of Stefan's property, but she had every right to remove herself from a toxic environment.
Wynne frowned as Margaret shamelessly made herself comfortable on the sofa, but with Audrey in the room, she didn't want to start a screaming match.
Without a word, the two women packed up the baby and walked out, heading to the adjacent property.
Once the house was quiet, Margaret began to prowl around. She scrutinized the furniture, peeked into the study, and eventually wandered into the master bedroom.
Seeing Winona's feminine touches everywhere made her stomach twist with resentment.
