He took off his glasses and walked over, his expression softening entirely. Gone was the ruthless, sharp-edged executive; in his place was a man who looked every bit the devoted husband.
Winona had missed Audrey fiercely, but she had missed him just as much.
Sensing the shift in the room, Wynne quietly excused herself, giving them the space they needed.
Stefan pulled Winona into his arms. "You must be exhausted. It was a rough few days, wasn't it?"
"Busy," she corrected with a sigh. "I'm sorry I didn't check in. The base was completely jammed—no signal at all."
Stefan nodded understandingly. It was standard protocol for highly classified projects to sever all outside communication.
That night, Winona couldn't put Audrey down, showering the baby in endless kisses.
Once Audrey finally fell asleep, Stefan gently transferred her to the crib beside their bed. Then, he leaned down and captured Winona's lips in a slow, lingering kiss.
The warmth of his touch ignited an immediate spark, but with their daughter sleeping just a few feet away, Winona felt a flush of shyness.
Reading her mind, Stefan effortlessly scooped her up and carried her into the adjoining study. Knowing she was exhausted from her trip, he kept things slow, worshipping her with tender devotion.
After showering together in the study's en suite, they slipped back into the master bedroom. Audrey was still sleeping soundly, completely oblivious to her parents' brief absence.
Winona curled up against Stefan's chest, found the perfect spot, and drifted into a deeply contented sleep.
Watching her peaceful face, Stefan pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. With his wife in his arms and his daughter sleeping nearby, he knew he had finally found absolute perfection.
