The factory manager offered to let them crash in the vacant employee dormitories for the night until the storm passed.
Fearing the treacherous road conditions, Winona had no choice but to agree.
She picked one of the cleaner units but frowned deeply at the flimsy, rusted deadbolt on the door.
Noticing her unease, Shiloh pointed down the hall. "I'll take the room right next to yours. If you need anything, just yell."
"That won't be necessary," Winona replied flatly.
Right on cue, Ezra Vane stepped seamlessly out of the shadows. "I will ensure Ms. Jowett's safety."
Shiloh jumped, startled. He hadn't realized Winona traveled with a covert security detail. He assumed her ultra-wealthy husband had arranged it. Clearly, they were deeply devoted to each other.
"Alright then, I won't intrude. Have a good night," Shiloh muttered, retreating into his room.
Winona turned to her guard. "There's an empty room right across from me. You and Waldo can get some rest there. I'll call you if anything happens."
"Waldo and I will take turns holding down the hallway," Ezra replied firmly. "This area is far too remote. If anything happens to you, Mr. Goddard would have our heads."
Knowing better than to argue, Winona nodded. "Fine."
Later that evening, she called Stefan to explain the situation.
"The storm is brutal out there. Stay put," Stefan agreed. "Ezra and Waldo will keep you secure. Don't worry about Audrey; I'll get her to sleep."
Knowing Stefan was home with their daughter instantly put Winona at ease.
The wind howled violently against the windows as Winona read through a few reports. By twelve-thirty, she finally turned off the lamp.
Just as she was drifting off, she heard the faint, deliberate sound of footsteps stopping outside her door.
Instantly alert, she grabbed her phone and texted Ezra.
