"Not even close."
Tilda raised her hand to strike herself again, but Natalie grabbed her wrist. Furious, Natalie pulled out her phone to dial for help.
The manager sneered, lunging forward to smack the phone out of Natalie's hand. It hit the floor, the screen shattering instantly.
"What's the rush with the police? If your aunt slaps herself until I'm perfectly satisfied today, I might just let you both off the hook."
The manager stared at Tilda with a vicious, uncontainable glee.
Tilda used to be the untouchable beauty queen back in their school days, worshipped by countless guys. Now, after marriage and kids, she had aged into a miserable, pathetic woman who had to beg for scraps at her feet.
It was absolutely intoxicating.
When Tilda first interviewed for the position, she had no idea her old classmate would be her boss. She had accepted the offer on the spot purely because the salary was three times what she was making before.
Yvette knew exactly how desperate Tilda's financial situation was. She knew that to keep this paycheck, pay her parents' medical bills, and put her kids through school, Tilda would swallow every ounce of abuse thrown her way.
She had reduced the former high school goddess to a personal punching bag.
Natalie stared at her shattered phone on the floor, her eyes radiating pure ice. "You're getting fired."
Yvette let out a sharp, mocking laugh, utterly unbothered. "Who the hell do you think you are? You think you can fire me? That's hilarious. Let me spell it out for you—you couldn't fire me in this lifetime, the next, or the one after that. In fact, by the time I'm done, you'll be on your knees begging me not to fire your aunt."
Felix didn't want the scene escalating any further. "Both of you, get out. And Tilda, you're terminated. Pack your desk and leave immediately."
Natalie realized arguing with them was pointless. She saw the ugly, purple bruising already blooming across Tilda's cheek. She needed to get her to a doctor. She pulled Tilda toward the elevator. "Give me your phone."
Tilda knew things had completely spiraled. Their only option now was to call Hassan. If she had known it would come to this, she never would have set foot in the Carlson Group.
"Who said you could leave?! I haven't paid you back for my slap yet!"
Before either of them could react, and ignoring Felix's half-hearted attempt to stop her, Yvette lunged forward. She swung her hand and delivered a vicious, ringing slap to the side of Natalie's head just as she was turning away.
The sheer force of the blow made Natalie's ears ring violently. The world spun, and her knees buckled.
"Natalie!"
Tilda's panicked scream was the last thing she heard before everything faded to black.
Panic completely overriding her fear of losing her job, Tilda rushed Natalie to the emergency room.
