Natalie had planned to take Quinn out for a final farewell dinner, but her grandmother called out of nowhere.
Yvonne didn't explain the situation; she just urged Natalie to hurry over.
Terrified that something was wrong with her health, Natalie immediately canceled on Quinn and rushed to the hospital.
She pushed open the door to the ward, only to freeze in her tracks.
Hassan was sitting casually by the window.
A fresh bouquet of flowers and a container of sliced pineapple sat on the bedside table.
Yvonne beamed at her. "Surprise! Hassan came to visit. He thought you'd be here, so he even brought some pineapple."
Natalie stared at him, thoroughly confused.
He looked back at her calmly. "Want some pineapple?"
Frowning, she marched over. "No. What are you doing here?"
Sensing the lingering tension between them, Yvonne handed Natalie an empty thermos. "Sweetheart, could you go grab us some hot tea from the lounge?"
Natalie took the thermos and headed out toward the cafeteria area.
Hassan followed right behind her.
The hospital hallways were packed with people—exactly the kind of chaotic, noisy environment he normally despised.
Natalie shot him a sharp glare. "What are you trying to do to my grandmother?"
Her eyes were filled with nothing but raw suspicion and defense.
He stepped forward and smoothly plucked the thermos from her hands. "Just checking to see how you were holding up."
Natalie let out a cold laugh. "You must be pretty disappointed I'm not running around like a headless chicken, begging for mercy."
The hot drink station had a line. He stood at the very back, looking entirely out of place among the exhausted, anxious families.
"I am a bit disappointed," he replied evenly. "You folded so quickly. Did you throw it all away just to protect that guy?"
"Hassan, what does losing this job prove? That I have to come crawling back to you?" She lowered her eyes and pulled out her phone. "If I lose this one, I'll just find another."
He didn't respond.
The line moved quickly.
