He scooped her into his arms with one hand and carried her into the bedroom.
The curtains were half-drawn, letting in a sliver of pale morning light.
On the massive bed, the white duvet lay tangled over the woman's frame.
Natalie slowly opened her eyes. Her throat felt like sandpaper. As she propped herself up, her entire body felt as though it had been dismantled and tightly restrung, aching with a profound, bone-deep soreness.
She reached for the glass of warm water on the nightstand and drank it to soothe her parched throat. Slowly, the chaotic memories of the previous night flooded her mind.
It was a blur, but stringing the events together, she knew exactly where it had started—with the tea served by that TV station director.
She glanced at the empty side of the bed. The man was already gone, leaving nothing behind but a single button she must have accidentally torn off his shirt.
Natalie pressed her fingers to her temples, massaging the throbbing ache. Pushing the covers aside, she stepped out of bed. Looking down, she saw faint, undeniable bruises of intimacy scattered across her skin. Jaw tight, she picked up her discarded watch and clothes from the floor.
Refusing the breakfast prepared by room service, she marched straight from the Aurea Club to the broadcasting network.
In the ground-floor lobby, she asked the receptionist to contact the director.
"He was taken away by the police for gross personal misconduct," the receptionist informed her.
Natalie froze. "When did this happen?"
"Just this morning."
Natalie stood there, stunned. She had come for blood, only to find the target already gone.
She drove to the bar from last night. Parking outside, she saw police tape sealing off the entrance.
She took a deep breath, her knuckles white around the steering wheel.
All of this pointed to one undeniable truth.
