Natalie Thornton paused, opening the bag of gummies. She kept one for herself and offered the rest around. "A friend gave them to me, but they really are good."
The fingers holding the black chess piece paused. The man glanced over from the corner of his eye.
The bag of gummies looked somewhat familiar.
After he made his move, the younger family member distributed the candies to everyone present, except Hassan Carlson's piece, which ended up in Natalie's hands.
Ultimately, this younger relative was just being tactful and socially aware, unaware of the current tension between Natalie and Hassan.
Natalie pinched the gummy, her gaze sweeping over her father-in-law, Faust Carlson, who sat right across from her.
She didn't want to cause any trouble or make Faust suspect her relationship with Hassan was on the rocks. While Cecily might show her some leniency, Faust would seize any mistake and blow it out of proportion.
She unwrapped the gummy and fed it to the man playing chess beside her.
His cool lips brushed against her fingertips. Whether it was intentional or not, Natalie didn't dwell on it.
She excused herself to go to the restroom.
At the corner of the hallway, she overheard Rhea and another relative gossiping. "...He's definitely being groomed as the heir. I heard they spent two hundred million at an auction for a one-of-a-kind piece, just to cater to his interests and hire the retired Mr. Yates to tutor that woman's son."
"No way. It's not even his biological son, and I heard the kid has issues."
"It just shows how useless Natalie is. They've been married for years, and she couldn't even keep her man, let alone give him a child. She has no real skills herself. She makes a hundred thousand a dance performance but can't even afford a decent handbag. What's the point? The last couple of times I saw her, her bags were a massive downgrade. Bags worth a few tens of thousands? That's lower class than what my dog carries."
"Million-dollar bags used to be nothing to her. If I had to deal with that kind of drop in status, I genuinely couldn't handle it."
