The car window reflected their blurred, overlapping silhouettes. Natalie stared outside at the brilliantly lit skyscrapers rushing past, the blinding lights making her eyes ache.

"Fine, I'll tell you. I'll take you there," she said softly. "Tell the driver to turn around. Go to Riverbend Road."

His flat tone was laced with pure mockery. "You always force me to use these methods before you finally tell the truth, don't you?"

She looked at him, her lips trembling slightly. Her pale, slender neck rose and fell with her hitched breaths, her eyes glossing over with tears. "Right. Hurry up and turn around. If we're too late, I have no idea what they might do to her."

He grabbed her wrist, a flicker of violent emotion finally breaking his icy facade. "Natalie, you're only destroying yourself by doing this! I thought you were just being willful, throwing a tantrum. I let the petty stunt with the wallet go! And now you dare to play with people's lives?"

She slapped him hard across the face. Watching his cheek instantly redden, her voice tore from her throat, raspy and ugly. "I told you I didn't know anything! But you used Nancy to force my hand! Did I have any other choice but to play along?! Stop giving me this sickening speech about tantrums! Do you think I have the power to cross you?! You could crush me with a single word! You could ruin the people I love without breaking a sweat! Even if you pinned the worst crime in the world on me today, what choice do I have but to confess to it?!"

The veins in her fragile neck strained. Her eyes were rimmed red, her face flushed with hysterical desperation. "If I were the one kidnapped today, would you be interrogating Gardenia like this?!"

His voice remained devastatingly flat, devoid of a single ounce of empathy. "She would never do something like this."

"Heh." A scoff scraped out of her throat as an endless sea of bitterness flooded her chest.

"If it wasn't you, how do you know she's on Riverbend Road?" His cold, calculating eyes judged her.

"What if she isn't there?" Natalie shot back.

His narrow eyes darkened dangerously. "Gardenia is the lead on my new project. If anything happens to her, neither of us will be able to explain it to Cecily. You'd better cut your losses right now."

Fire raged in Natalie's chest. She wasn't even certain if Gardenia was actually at Riverbend Road. She had simply deduced who the real culprit was and offered the location based on a hunch.

Riverbend Road was far out in the suburbs, right next to an abandoned steel mill.
