Nancy replied with three question marks.
[What the hell did you do? You know if you end up in jail, I won't even be able to visit you that often!]
Natalie's lips twitched. What a terrible joke.
[I didn't steal or rob anyone. I played cards with the society ladies today and cleaned them out.]
[Wow. You really showed no mercy. Aren't you worried they'll hold a grudge?]
[Let them. They were the ones who dragged me to the table in the first place, even after I told them I didn't want to play.]
And it was true—she genuinely hadn't wanted to play at first.
But Rhea and her two eager sidekicks had absolutely insisted on pulling her into the game. It was obvious the three of them were planning to gang up and completely fleece her.
They just hadn't expected the tables to be turned so brutally.
When Hassan stepped out of the shower, he saw Natalie sitting on the sofa with her knees pulled up, smiling as she typed away. He didn't know who she was talking to, but the glow from the screen illuminated her delicate features, highlighting her flawless, luminous complexion.
"Go take your shower," he said flatly.
Natalie let out a soft yawn and headed for the bathroom, still entirely engrossed in texting.
She didn't notice that his eyes were following her the entire time. Right as she stepped inside, he added, "Don't play on your phone in the tub. The water will get cold and you'll end up sick again."
Natalie shot him a fleeting glance. "I'll set a ten-minute timer."
Hassan paused.
Normally, she would never have been so clinical about it. In the past, she would have smiled and playfully asked him to keep track of the time for her, reminding him to knock when she needed to get out.
That was how she used to behave—warm and affectionately reliant, a stark contrast to the cold, rational detachment she had just shown him.
After happily exchanging goodnights with Nancy, Natalie finished her shower and pushed open the bathroom door. She froze when she saw Adrian tucked into her bed, while Hassan was holding his phone. Gardenia's voice was drifting clearly through the speaker.
Gardenia sounded sickeningly intimate. "Did the baby drink his bedtime milk? You need to drink lots of milk so you can grow big and tall."
Adrian gave an earnest little nod.
A soft giggle echoed from the other end of the line, grating harshly on Natalie's nerves. Then, in a teasing, familiar tone, Gardenia asked, "And did the other big baby drink his?"
Bang!
Natalie viciously kicked the bathroom door.
