Natalie glanced toward the dense shrubs. "If you wanted frogs, couldn't you just have someone fetch them for you?"
"Catching them yourself is entirely different from having them handed to you. Don't you think?" Cyrus replied.
He seemed to be in high spirits tonight and was eager to drag Natalie into a game. "Tell you what. Let's go hunt for those traps together. Whoever finds the ones with the most frogs wins. The winner gets to ask the loser a single question, and the loser has to answer completely truthfully. We'll put a one-hour time limit on it. What do you say? It doesn't seem like you have anything better to do right now."
Natalie's eyes darted thoughtfully before settling back on him.
Offering stakes like that meant he definitely already had a specific question in mind.
She was honestly quite curious about what Cyrus wanted to know about her.
Natalie happily nodded her agreement.
They both flicked on their phone flashlights and stepped onto the pebble path, beginning to sweep through the surrounding grass.
Bent over at the waist, Natalie focused entirely on the small circle of light on the ground. Her mind was fully occupied with finding the tiny traps, leaving absolutely no room for her to dwell on anything else. Miraculously, her turbulent emotions began to quiet down.
As they walked along, they were both so engrossed in the hunt that they accidentally crashed right into each other.
As Natalie stumbled backward, Cyrus immediately reached out and caught her by the waist.
His arm was wrapped securely around her. She was dressed in nothing but a thin robe, radiating the rich, floral scent of her body wash as the crickets serenaded them in the background.
It was the very first time Cyrus had ever realized that a woman's body could feel so incredibly soft. Or perhaps... it was just Natalie's body that felt like this.
"What the hell are you doing?"
A frigid voice suddenly cut through the air behind them.
Both Natalie and Cyrus froze in place.
Quickly releasing each other, they spun around to look.
Hassan was standing perfectly still beneath the stone archway. The landscape lighting behind him cast a long, imposing shadow that stretched menacingly all the way to Natalie's feet.
But the most terrifying thing about him in that moment was his eyes.
