The Abbot gave her a long, unreadable look, his eyes slowly sweeping over her before he finally spoke. "I prepared three, but not because of Cecily's visit."

"Then why?"

"Because six years ago, I held that child."

Natalie froze. That was right around the time Adrian was born.

"Hassan brought him here?" she asked.

The old man nodded.

Natalie lowered her eyes, a cold, bitter smile touching her lips. She pulled her talisman out of her pocket.

A beam of sunlight angled through the window, striking the silk pouch. She narrowed her eyes, catching a faint whiff of temple incense radiating from the fabric. It smelled strangely familiar.

But she had never been to a place like this, nor had she ever asked for a blessing before.

She looked back at the Abbot. "I'll accept the talisman. Thank you. But I have one more question."

Her voice slowed down, taking on a heavier weight. "I want to know... is my mother doing well on the other side?"

She forced a smile, fully aware that she was just desperately seeking some cheap psychological comfort.

The Abbot looked her dead in the eye. "No."

Natalie was instantly irritated. "You didn't even bother to count on your fingers or pretend to divine the future! If you want to scam me out of a donation, at least put on a show."

She held up her hand, mimicking the exaggerated fortune-telling gestures she'd seen on TV.

The Abbot actually chuckled at her theatrics. "So, how much were you planning to donate?"

Natalie scoffed. "Nothing."

She spun on her heel and walked out.

She decided coming here today was a massive mistake. Seeking closure or comfort from an old monk? She must have lost her mind.

She stared at the little pouch in her hand for another second before shoving it back into her pocket.

The monastery had private quarters reserved for guests.

The rooms were all single occupancy. Natalie's room was right next to Hassan's.

That evening, they joined the monks in the dining hall for a vegetarian dinner.

Afterward, Cecily insisted on dragging Natalie and Hassan to the fertility shrine.

Natalie shot her a look. "Cecily, do you honestly believe in this?"

She and Hassan weren't even sleeping together anymore. The fertility statue couldn't exactly magically implant a baby in her.

Ignoring her complaints, Cecily shoved them both into the shrine room.
