Jude's expression darkened, his brow furrowing instinctively. "What happened to her?"
Unable to hear the voice on the other end, Gardenia stared straight at him.
Jude met Gardenia's gaze, and for a fleeting second, a bizarre surge of guilt struck him.
He tried to justify it—he and Cora had been engaged since childhood, so showing concern was only reasonable.
On the phone, Hassan simply gave him the address without another word.
Staring at the location sent to his phone, Jude looked back at Gardenia. "I have something to take care of."
Gardenia locked eyes with him. "Where are you going? Are you leaving me too?"
He lowered his eyelashes and took a deep breath. "I'm going to see Hassan."
Her eyes lit up instantly. "What did he say on the phone just now?"
She suddenly sat up in the hospital bed, staring at him intently. "Did he ask about me?"
Her voice was thick with desperation.
The air in the room thickened. Jude had no idea what to say.
Hassan hadn't mentioned her at all.
"I'm going with you to see him," Gardenia said, tossing the blanket aside to get up.
Jude stopped her. "You need to stay here and finish your IV."
"I don't want to. Are you plotting something? Why else would you want to see him alone?" Gardenia looked at him with blatant suspicion.
Jude hesitated, lowering his head. His voice turned gravelly. "Cora is in surgery. I have to go."
Gardenia's entire body went rigid, her face draining of color. She slowly lay back down and turned her back to him, refusing to look at his face. "Right. She's your wife. Of course you should go. Go. I'm fine."
Jude massaged his temples. "I'll be back as soon as I can."
An inexplicable panic gnawed at him. The moment the words left his mouth, he turned to leave.
