Natalie's mind went entirely blank. Driven purely by instinct, her trembling hands held Cora tightly. Her voice cracked into a hoarse scream, "Ambulance! Someone call an ambulance! Please... save her!"
The woman in her arms kept slipping downward. Natalie had no strength left, but she held onto her stiffly, too terrified to move, too terrified to let go. She babbled incoherently, "Cora, don't—don't close your eyes. Please don't... the ambulance is coming."
Just then, the elevator doors chimed open.
Jude rushed out, pressing his phone to his ear, frantically trying to soothe the person on the other end. "Gardenia! Where are you?! I'm coming to find you right now. I don't blame you for not helping me! Don't do anything stupid!"
He cast a fleeting glance toward the main entrance, which was in complete chaos.
But he had no time to care. He ignored the panicked crowd and sprinted toward the side exit, still pleading into the phone. "I'll listen to whatever you say from now on! You can ask me to do anything! ...Okay, I'll never have anything to do with Natalie again. ...Okay, I'll divorce Cora! I'll stay with you forever, just please be safe!"
The frantic screams and the sirens calling for an ambulance faded further and further away.
He dimly registered that someone had gotten hurt and an ambulance was on the way.
But he couldn't spare a single ounce of concern for some irrelevant tragedy.
He only cared about his Flower.
Through the chaotic layers of the crowd, as she was being lifted onto a stretcher, Cora's vision scattered. Through blurred, tear-filled eyes, she watched the dark silhouette of a man moving further and further away. His gaze would never linger on her.
Just before her consciousness plunged into darkness, scenes from her childhood flashed before her eyes, spinning endlessly.
She had been raised with a strict traditional upbringing, where her only job was to be obedient and proper.
Studying, making friends, learning the virtues of loyalty, humility, and obedience—she had spent her entire life being conditioned to yield.
She had often asked herself whether her teenage crush on Jude was genuine love, or just a submission to the rules she had been taught to follow.
She supposed she would never know the answer now.
