She lowered her eyes, feeling momentarily confused. The way Mr. Chadwick had looked at her at the studio that day had also been strangely intense.
[Are you guys not talking?]
Natalie texted directly.
[We haven't been in touch lately. Is something wrong?]
[When I saw him a while back, I asked him to say hi to you for me. I assumed he would have reached out to you.]
The 'typing' bubble hovered on the screen for a while before a response came.
[Haha, maybe the old man just forgot.]
Natalie didn't push the subject any further. But the lingering sense of oddness remained.
As she pondered this, she dialed Nancy's number.
The phone rang for a long time, but no one picked up.
Natalie frowned, a sense of underlying worry creeping in, and tried calling again.
She then pulled up her laptop to check the front door security footage. Starting from that morning, she scrubbed through the video at double speed.
About an hour before she returned, Nancy had opened the door and left on her own.
Natalie let out a small breath of relief. At least Nancy had left willingly.
She got up and walked into the kitchen.
Sure enough, there was a sticky note attached to the fridge—Natalie, your favorite corn soup is simmering on the stove.
Natalie lifted the lid to find a pot of piping hot corn soup, ready to eat straight away.
She ladled out a bowl for herself and slowly finished it.
It was already dark outside. Just as Natalie was about to head out to look for her, the doorbell rang.
She went over to open the door and found Nancy standing there with Yale Easton.
Nancy's eyes were somewhat unfocused, and she looked visibly unwell.
Natalie quickly stepped forward. "What happened?"
Yale spoke up. "I was passing by the neighborhood and saw her wandering aimlessly by herself."
