She was so terrified she didn’t even dare stay at her own place, completely paralyzed by the fear that the stalker would track her down and somehow drag Natalie into danger.

"Nancy, don’t panic just yet," Natalie said, guiding her to the sofa and handing her a glass of water. "I’m going to help you. First, let's figure out a safe place you can stay."

Nancy took a few desperate gulps of water, and the frantic pounding in her chest finally began to ease. "Okay."

Natalie looked at her friend’s distracted, shell-shocked expression, her own mind racing with worry. Grabbing her phone, she stood up, walked into the bedroom, shut the door, and dialed Hassan Carlson’s number.

The call connected quickly. He sounded mildly surprised. "What's wrong?"

"I remember you have a highly skilled hacker working for you. Can they crack an anonymous account on the dark web?"

He paused, his tone shifting to something much heavier. "How did you get mixed up in something like that? Is this about Nancy Gaines? I told you before, stay away from her."

"Can you just lend me your guy for a bit? We can make a deal."

The line was dead quiet for a long time. When he finally spoke, there was a faint, mocking smile in his voice. "What exactly do you have that's worth trading with me?"

"Isn't Adrian Carlson enough? You said it yourself—as long as your grandmother and I keep our mouths shut, no one will ever know the truth. If you want to buy my silence, you have to offer me something in return."

"You really do go all out for the people around you, don't you?" It was hard to tell if he was teasing or sneering. "Natalie, do you even know why she hid things from you? Or what else she’s keeping secret? You don't know a damn thing, yet you throw yourself on the line for her."

"You're right, I don't know. But what I do know is how good she’s been to me all these years."

"And what about me?" he asked, his voice suddenly dropping to a near-whisper.

The air fell silent again.

It was an impossible question.

He had been good to her once, too.

But the wounds he had inflicted were deeper than anyone else's.

Hassan was the one to break the silence. "Tomorrow at noon. I'll have him find you."

Just as Natalie let out a breath of relief, Hassan added, "When you have time, let's go visit your grandmother together. Isn't she scheduled for surgery soon?"

"You've never cared about my grandmother before."

"I just have something I need to ask her," he said casually. "She’s probably mentioned wanting to see me anyway."
