Hassan stepped out of the bedroom and instructed Faye to make some chowder. His gaze then swept across the house.

Finally, his eyes settled on the entryway. Seeing Natalie's shoes still sitting by the door, his eyes darkened slightly as he instinctively searched the house again, but there was no sign of her.

He looked over at Mary, who was tidying up. "Where's my wife?"

Clutching the dusting cloth in her hand, Mary pointed toward the master bedroom. "I just saw Mrs. Carlson go in there. She should still be inside."

A faint glimmer seemed to spark in his eyes as he strode directly toward the bedroom.

The main room was still empty, but he heard rustling coming from the walk-in closet.

Stepping inside, he found Natalie packing her things.

She paused the moment he walked in, looking up at him. "Did you need something?"

Hassan looked down at the massive suitcase.

She had already packed once before. There were still plenty of her belongings left in the closet—all things he had bought for her, which was why she hadn't packed them initially.

But the thought that Gardenia might be living here after she left rubbed her the wrong way. Her things would either be claimed by the other woman or tossed out like trash. Since she despised both options, she figured she might as well take them.

She looked up at him. "You're not the type of guy who demands back all the gifts he bought after a divorce, right?"

The man stared down at her, his eyes as dark as ink, his voice dropping an octave. "Do you think I am?"

Natalie smiled lightly. "Of course not. You're hardly strapped for cash."

She went back to packing. Taking a long stride, he closed the distance between them, leaned down, and unceremoniously slammed her suitcase shut with one hand.

Sitting on a small stool, Natalie froze with a folded shirt suspended in mid-air, her eyes flying up to meet his. "What are you doing?"

His tone was frosty. "I'm not the type to take back gifts after a divorce. But Natalie, we aren't divorced yet."

Natalie straightened her posture, looking down with a cynical smile. "Isn't it just a matter of time? You heard the doctor at the hospital today. The surgery is happening soon."

"Didn't you just say earlier that as long as we aren't divorced by tomorrow, this is still your home today?"

He used the exact words she had used to shut down Gardenia to shut her down.
