The second bowl she brought out went to Hassan, and the third to Adrian. By the time the three of them had already started eating, Gardenia had only just received her bowl.

She strongly suspected Faye was doing it on purpose. Natalie had probably bribed the maid with some sort of perk.

In addition to the soup, there were a few side dishes on the table, including a plate of steamed crab. The shells had been cracked beforehand, making it effortless to eat the meat.

Standing off to the side, Faye piped up, "I saw that Mrs. Carlson was home, so I made sure to boil the crab. Isn't this your favorite, ma'am?"

Hearing her call her 'Mrs. Carlson' over and over again thoroughly disgusted Gardenia.

But she didn't have the status to complain right now.

With dark thoughts swirling, she cast a covert glance at her bowl of chowder.

She knew the Carlson family's rice was specially sourced—the expensive kind that came in small, vacuum-sealed bags.

Before cooking, the maid always washed and soaked the rice specifically, before moving on to prep the other ingredients.

She had gathered her intel perfectly: Cecily was out today, and Natalie had supposedly moved out. With just the few of them here, it was the perfect opportunity to strike.

The only hitch was Natalie unexpectedly showing up.

But she already had a backup plan. She would text Jacob Holt later. As long as she told him Natalie had returned to Sycamore Quays just to spite her, Jacob would absolutely storm in and drag her out.

By that point, Hassan would probably be out of his mind. She would carry him into the bedroom first.

As for what might happen between Natalie and Jacob, she didn't know and didn't care.

Maybe Jacob would push her away in disgust.

"Didn't you say you were hungry? Why aren't you eating?" Hassan looked at Adrian.

Adrian gripped his spoon tightly and stood up. "I need to go to the bathroom."

A faint smirk tugged at the corner of Gardenia's lips as she lowered her head to eat. This was the excuse she and the boy had rehearsed.

Hassan gave a curt nod. "Go on."

Adrian headed straight for the restroom. Until Gardenia sent him the signal, he probably wouldn't come out.
