Hassan stared at her, fell silent for a moment, and then said, "My divorce from Natalie is between her and me."
Gardenia froze. Didn't that implicitly mean his divorce from Natalie had nothing to do with her?
"Adrian is going to be late for school." He didn't look at her again. Picking up Adrian's backpack, he slipped it onto the boy's little arms and led him out the door.
Gardenia followed behind him, looking at his tall back, feeling awful. That phrase, 'between her and me,' undoubtedly cast her as an outsider.
It felt as if she could never integrate into the space between him and Natalie.
This realization bred an indescribable jealousy and resentment in her heart.
Why should a useless woman like Natalie, who only knew how to spend money, get so much so easily?
She had sacrificed nothing, yet she lived far better than those who worked hard.
She could only keep comforting herself that Natalie would soon be discarded.
Once they divorced, the two would sever all ties, and Hassan definitely wouldn't waste another ounce of attention on Natalie.
Aside from her, there wouldn't be another woman closer to Hassan.
Following Hassan into the elevator, Gardenia originally intended to get in his car, but he glanced at her. "Didn't you say you were taking Adrian?"
Hassan had assigned a dedicated driver and a separate car for the kid.
Gardenia's face stiffened momentarily, but she was the one who had made the excuse earlier. Lowering her head, she asked, "Then how about we have dinner with Adrian tonight?"
"I'm busy," he said briefly before getting into the car.
Gardenia didn't know what his "busy" entailed, but she couldn't press him.
