Gardenia's voice trembled slightly. "Are you threatening me, Jude?"

He ground his teeth, his jaw muscles flexing. "I'm not threatening you. I'm telling you to spit out everything you know."

Gardenia spat back resentfully, "I don't know anything! I only asked because your attitude has been way off lately, don't you get that?"

Her voice weakened, catching a hint of a sob. "Do you even remember what you promised me before? Have you forgotten it all? Right now, in your heart, is there anything more important than your daughter and Cora? Are you really only caring about Cora because you grew up together? You grew up with plenty of people in our circle! I don't see you being this emotional over anyone else!"

The barrage of information slammed into Jude's brain, piece by piece shattering the barrier of self-deception he had built up.

His heart raced faster than ever, and the veins at his temples throbbed, filling him with an unspeakable dread and panic—like a kid caught red-handed doing something terrible.

His breathing was heavy, the only sound he made.

Gardenia was just throwing words around, assuming Jude would inevitably deny them.

But she didn't expect to be met with dead silence.

Her heart skipped a beat, her eyes darting around wildly. "Why are you quiet? Say something, Jude!"

Her voice was shaking.

It was as if, compared to him finding out she had lied to him back then, she was far more terrified of the fact that, without knowing anything, he had fallen in love with Cora despite his guilt toward her.

"Say something, Jude!" Gardenia couldn't believe it. How could her years of history with him lose out to Cora?

It was clear that after she claimed she and Cora didn't get along, Jude cut ties with Cora entirely for her sake. Even when their families tried to set them up, it was all just an act.
