Only then did he learn that every year on his birthday, Cora had flown to Mothria Country to see him.
He picked up a video camera from the box. It still held a video she had recorded.
It was snowing heavily. He was in a restaurant in Mothria Country, surrounded by a group of people celebrating his birthday. Gardenia was right beside him. A towering, multi-tiered cake sat in front of him, and the warm lights bathed everyone's faces in a gentle, joyful glow.
"It's your birthday, make a wish!" someone cheered. "Don't tell me it's to get together with Gardenia sooner!"
His gaze shifted to Gardenia next to him. "A wish? I don't have any wishes. You can have my wish."
The floor-to-ceiling windows revealed the warm, lively scene inside, contrasting with the blizzard shutting down the city outside. While pedestrians hurried past, she alone stood perfectly still. Wrapped in heavy winter clothes, a scarf, and a beanie, she held the camera, occasionally checking the viewfinder and occasionally looking up at the room. When her eyes fell on the people inside, her silhouette would inevitably space out for a long time, a smile lingering on her lips.
The knuckles of the hand gripping the camera turned white. He stared blankly, watching the video over and over an unknown number of times.
The sky outside darkened. A maid knocked on the door, calling him down for dinner.
His body stiff with tension, he slowly placed the camera back into the box.
There were also some landscape photos inside. He picked one up.
It was a shot of a lush green patch of grass by the road, the focus pinned perfectly on a small blue flower right in the center.
He would never forget it for the rest of his life. This flower was called a speedwell. It was the same flower Gardenia had once brought to the hospital, taking his hand, guiding his fingers over it, letting him smell it, and making sure he'd remember it forever.
It seemed Cora liked these kinds of flowers too. She had taken many photos of them—spring, summer, autumn, winter; from budding sprouts to full bloom, to withering.
There were also many other scenic photos.
Jude's thoughts were indeed pulled back to the days he spent with Gardenia in the hospital, but his mindset was completely different now.
In the past, whenever he thought of the year Gardenia spent keeping him company in the hospital, he was always filled with guilt toward her, immediately thinking of ways to repay her.
But just now, all he had thought about was whether Cora liked this flower too, completely forgetting about Gardenia.
He slowly lay back, his hair falling away to expose his forehead, his brows knitted tightly in a deep frown.
