An overwhelming wave of grief repeatedly drowned him. He spoke whatever came to mind, completely devoid of logic. "She had an entire cabinet of perfumes she bought, yet she was brought back smelling of rot. She was a photographer, our house is filled with photos she took. We hadn't even taken our family portrait that year. She said we'd do it when she got back... she was going to take the photos..."
He was crying so hard he couldn't form another sentence.
Natalie's heart ached right along with his.
She knew exactly what he was talking about.
Coralie Chadwick had even said that when they took the family portrait, she was going to pull Natalie and Chloe Banks in for a shot too.
She had said that friends were family, too.
"Mr. Chadwick, is there really no lead on the killer?" Natalie frowned. "What was the chemical agent injected into Coralie's body?"
He ground his teeth, his eyes bloodshot and wide. "It's a compound that has never been seen on the market before. That's why I switched my focus to chemical research. I just... I just want to get closer to the truth. I have to avenge my daughter."
"Then last time, when I told you to say hello to Coralie for me, why didn't you correct me and say she had already passed away?" Natalie asked.
He stared at Natalie blankly. "Hassan Carlson told me not to mention Coralie to you. He said you suffered a massive psychological shock because of her death back then."
She was completely stunned. "So, the reason I forgot Coralie died is because I suffered some kind of trauma."
"I don't know the specifics, but that seems to be the gist of it. Natalie, I can't let go of Coralie's death either, but as a father..." He took a deep, heavy breath. "I still hope you can move forward. Live Coralie's share of life for her, too."
Her emotions were in a tangled knot. There were too many suspicious details surrounding Coralie's case, especially regarding Hassan.
Natalie's intuition told her that he definitely knew more than Mr. Chadwick did.
She stood up and comforted the older man, knowing that her continued presence would only remind him of his daughter and cause him more pain.
