Natalie stepped out of the dining room, but instead of heading to Hassan's suite, she went toward the restroom to find Nancy.
She had noticed her friend had been gone for a long time.
There were two restrooms on this floor. Natalie checked both, but there was no sign of Nancy anywhere.
She pulled out her phone, just about to call her, when Cecily called instead.
Remembering that her grandmother was about to undergo surgery, Natalie figured there was no need to anger the elderly woman right now. She answered the phone and politely greeted her.
"Didn't Hassan tell you? He asked you to come over for lunch," Cecily demanded.
Natalie paused for a second. "Yes, I'm already here."
"Then hurry up. What kind of manners is it to keep our guest waiting?" With that, the old woman hung up.
Natalie quickly texted Gideon to say she had an emergency and needed to leave, while simultaneously dialing Nancy's number.
It rang for a while before the call connected.
"Where are you? I thought you went to the restroom, but I couldn't find you." Natalie's tone was laced with anxiety.
Nancy's voice, however, was smooth and unhurried. "Natalie, don't worry about me. I decided to head home first."
Natalie was caught off guard.
Normally, once Nancy agreed to a meal, she wouldn't leave abruptly.
Unless she had a sudden, unavoidable reason—just like Natalie did right now.
"Did something happen? Why the sudden rush to go back?"
"It's nothing. I just remembered I left the fish I was marinating out on the counter. If I don't put it in the fridge, Cup might accidentally eat it."
That was a valid concern. That silly dog was a notorious thief and had choked on a fishbone before.
"Okay, head back then. I'll let everyone know. Text me when you get home." Right as Natalie finished her sentence, a strange voice filtered through the receiver.
