The two understudies glanced at Kara. It had been Kara who invited them to dinner that day, but they knew Kara wouldn't have sabotaged herself since she had also been injured.
Kara's heart seized. She was originally supposed to have dinner with her boyfriend. He had specifically booked the restaurant, but just as she and the two understudies were walking out of the Arts Center, he took a call, claimed he had sudden overtime, and said the reservation was non-refundable. He had been the one to suggest she take the two understudies with her instead.
Kara's boyfriend came from a very wealthy family.
Situations like this had happened before, but he had never once suggested she bring someone else along just to save money. If she didn't want to go, the reservation simply went to waste.
But that day, he had explicitly brought it up. Kara hadn't thought twice about it and had taken the two girls.
It was a high-end restaurant with a grand, sweeping staircase in the center of the first floor. As the three of them were walking down after their meal, a waiter had accidentally bumped into them from behind, sending all of them tumbling down the stairs.
Kara had never suspected the waiter did it on purpose; she had merely demanded compensation from the restaurant.
But after Natalie's words, a creeping realization dawned on her. The sequence of events was entirely too coincidental.
Still, she refused to believe it. She gritted her teeth and glared at Natalie. "It was you. You're just trying to deflect the blame."
Natalie despised wasting breath. She had already explained herself once. If idiots refused to listen, saying another word was just a waste of time.
She turned to leave.
Kara intended to block her path, but when Natalie shot her a sharp, piercing look, Kara suddenly froze, intimidated. Natalie's gaze felt like it stripped her bare.
It was as if Natalie already knew that the seed of doubt had been planted in her mind.
Kara didn't try to stop her again. Instead, she immediately dialed her boyfriend's number.
He didn't answer.
The panic in her chest swelled, and she called him several more times in rapid succession.
The two understudies watched her, frowning. "Kara, you don't think that waiter pushed us on purpose, do you? The only person who knew the three of us were going there was your boyfriend."
Jude clamped his hand around her wrist, his dark eyes brimming with amusement. "Such a good show waiting for us. Why wouldn't you want to join the fun?"
He practically shoved her into the passenger seat.
He drove her straight to Golden Night.
When Natalie walked in, her gaze bypassed Hassan entirely and landed on a relatively unfamiliar face.
It was a man she had never seen in Hassan's circle before.
But she recognized him. It was Kara's boyfriend, the one who used to pick Kara up from the Arts Center all the time.
She froze, unable to comprehend why Kara's boyfriend was sitting there. Was this a coincidence?
Jacob Holt wasn't present today, and the rest of the group was significantly more polite to Natalie than usual.
