Stella shot up from the stone bench, her fists clenching and unclenching at her sides. She slowly knelt in front of Suzie, her sorrowful gaze fixed on her friend’s stomach, her expression a mixture of grief and horror.
“What about the babies?” Stella asked again, her voice thick with emotion. She already cared about those babies more than she wanted to admit.
Suzie bit her lip and shook her head forcefully as fresh tears streamed down her pale cheeks. Sobbing, she recounted every detail of what had happened in the operating room, leaving nothing out.
By the time she finished, Suzie was crying uncontrollably, like everything she had been holding in was finally breaking loose.
Stella’s face was also streaked with tears. She wrapped Suzie in a tight embrace, patting her back comfortingly. “You’ve been through so much. It’s okay now, it’s okay. It’s all over. The most important thing is that the babies are safe. As long as they’re here, nothing else matters.”
The two friends, closer than sisters, held each other and wept.
After a long while, when they finally pulled apart, Stella’s face had gone cold. A furious glint shone in her eyes as she clenched her jaw. “That bastard, Jamie. How dare he bully you like this? I swear, I’ll make him pay for this sooner or later.”
Suzie’s calm demeanor didn’t waver. “I’ve thought about that. I’ll take leave from work as soon as it becomes obvious. And I think I need to find a new place to live. He knows your address, so I…”
Stella gently patted her arm. “Okay, it’s settled. A pregnancy with triplets shows much faster than a single one, so you need to plan ahead. I’ll take care of finding a house. I’ll move in with you, and we’ll hire a nanny.”
Suzie looked at Stella with gratitude. She felt a deep sense of relief. With Stella by her side, having someone to talk things through with, she felt a profound sense of security.
