Chloe paused deliberately before continuing in an even more dramatic tone, “I was furious when I heard that. Ever since Jamie was forced to marry her, he never mistreated her or her family. But what did he get in return? Her whole family is nothing but a pack of greedy leeches! Not only do they drain him dry, but they steal from him too!”
“Oh my god, really?” Lexi gasped, her expression of exaggerated shock worthy of an award. “I really underestimated her. I guess stealing a couple of my contracts isn't so surprising after all.”
“Have you said enough?!” Suzie’s icy voice cut through their chatter.
“Ooh, look who’s getting angry,” Chloe said mockingly, her eyes darting between Lexi and Suzie.
Then, Chloe suddenly bent down, her face just inches from Suzie’s. “Now, now, don’t say we’re bullying you. Tell me, which part of what I said was a lie? I know you won’t admit it, but don't forget, Jamie told me all of this himself.”
The color drained from Suzie’s face, and a faint smile touched Chloe’s lips.
Chloe leaned even closer, pressing her lips to Suzie’s ear and whispering, “Jamie… oh, sorry, I mean your ex-husband. You probably don’t know this, but we slept together back in Mistholm. He held me in his arms and told me… he said that you have a pretty face, but in bed, you’re like a dead fish. Utterly boring.”
“He also said… he said your whole family are vampires, and he couldn’t stand any of you. Oh… and he said the sight of you makes him sick…”
Suzie couldn’t quite hear the rest of what Chloe was saying. Her body felt weightless, her mind adrift. Yet she managed to grip the arms of her chair, using every ounce of her strength to suppress the fury rising within her.
“If you have any evidence that I’m guilty, then show it,” Suzie’s voice was low and hollow. “Otherwise, stop spouting all this nonsense.”
Chloe stared at her for a few seconds, then slowly straightened up. The woman before her had completely changed. Her eyes were devoid of emotion, her expression suddenly serene. In just a few seconds, she was like a different person.
*What?* Chloe thought, bewildered. *Weren’t my words sharp enough? Shouldn’t she be lunging at me, trying to tear my hair out? Where’s all that fire she had in Jamie’s office?*
If only Suzie had attacked her, Chloe could have shown the officers her injuries and added assault to Suzie’s list of crimes.
