With a nimble finger, Lexi tapped the delete button for the audio file. The file vanished from the screen right before Suzie’s eyes.
A smug grin spread across Lexi’s face.
“Hahaha…”
Her unrestrained laughter echoed across the pool area.
Suzie stood frozen, her eyes vacant. If Lexi was bold enough to let her hear the evidence that framed her, she wouldn’t be stupid enough to keep another copy.
The file was gone. It was all gone.
After a moment, she sank back into her chair, utterly dejected.
Mia, who had been watching the scene unfold, felt a knot of dread tighten in her stomach. She knew that the recording Suzie had just heard must have been incredibly important. What else were they going to do to her?
As much as she wanted to, there was nothing she could do to help. All she could offer was her presence. Heart aching for Suzie, she quietly moved her chair closer, took Suzie’s hand, and helped her settle back, quietly trying to steady her.
Lexi’s wild laughter finally subsided. She stared at Suzie, her voice dropping to a smug whisper. “So sorry to tell you this, but that recording was the only copy. Of course, you and I are the only ones who know that.”
Suzie’s fingers trembled where they gripped the armrest, the color draining from her face. It was just as she’d suspected. This was a trap, a meticulously planned setup designed by Lexi and Chloe just for her.
Just as Suzie was drowning in despair, Lexi’s voice rang out again, this time booming and performative.
Why was all this happening? All she wanted was to earn some money and slowly build a better life for herself. How did she get mixed up in all of this?
But Lexi seemed to be getting angrier as she spoke, her eyes burning with a rage that seemed ready to erupt. She channeled all her lingering resentment from the last stolen contract into her voice.
“Suzie, you scheming bitch! I can’t believe you’d use such a despicable trick to steal my client. What, did Jamie dump you? Were you really that desperate for money? It’s all too convenient! You get rid of Josie right when I’m out sick. Now I’m starting to wonder if you were the one who poisoned my food!”
Overcome with emotion, and before Suzie could even react, Lexi lunged forward and slapped her hard across the face.
As her hand connected with Suzie’s cheek, Lexi spat out a single word.
—“Bitch!”
