“Lexi! How dare you hit her?!”
Mia’s face went pale. She instantly grabbed Lexi’s wrist and yelled, “I can’t believe you’re this vicious! Can’t you see the state she’s in? She’s clearly not well. You’re just bullying her!”
Lexi shot Mia a fiery glare, her voice laced with venom. “I did hit her. What are you going to do about it?!”
Then, her tone turned mocking. “Oh, I didn’t even notice you. Mia, right? Still just an assistant after all this time? That’s embarrassing.”
“That’s none of your business!” Mia shot back, her voice firm. “And don’t forget, the police officers are right in that room!”
Lexi just snorted, wrenching her arm free from Mia’s grasp. “You ungrateful little brat. After I’m done sending Suzie to have a long chat with the police, you’re next.”
Lexi rubbed her wrist, her gaze shifting back to Suzie. “And you,” she said, her voice low and threatening, “if you dare tell the officers I hit you, I’ll make sure your little fan here is held jointly responsible for the millions of dollars of equipment that was lost.”
She jutted her chin toward Chloe, a silent reminder that with Chloe—and by extension, Jamie—on her side, she could make good on her threat.
“You—!”
Mia was so furious she raised her hand to strike Lexi, but Suzie caught her wrist, her grip surprisingly tight.
Mia looked at Suzie’s blank expression and ashen face, and her anger gave way to sorrow. She let her arm fall and stepped back to Suzie’s side, her voice choking as she said her name, “Suzie…”
Her voice was a choked, trembling whisper, so full of sorrow and pain it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began. As she spoke, two silent tears escaped and streamed down her cheeks.
In the past, if Lexi or Chloe had dared to speak to her like that, she wouldn’t have stood for it for a second. And if they had laid a hand on her, she would have fought back with everything she had.
Mia, however, had been completely stunned by the word “babies.” Her jaw dropped. All this time, she had assumed Suzie wore loose clothes simply because she’d gained a little weight around her waist and thighs.
She never would have imagined that Suzie was pregnant. And from the sound of it, with more than one child.
Only then did Mia realize why Chloe and Lexi had been saying those things.
