Suzie awoke with a groan on a massive, luxurious bed.
She rubbed her temples and slowly opened her eyes. Through her blurry vision, she saw the soft, warm glow of a floor lamp beside the bed. The heavy curtains were drawn, making it impossible to tell if it was day or night.
Her eyes scanned the room—the wardrobe, the armchair, the vanity… everything, down to its placement, was identical to her old bedroom at the Baylor Manor.
“The Baylor Manor?!”
Suzie whispered to herself, the realization hitting her all at once. She shot up in bed, stunned. Wasn't she in Jamie’s car? Why was she here?
She tried to recall what happened, only remembering the moment she had drifted off to sleep in his car. She must have been in a deep sleep.
Panicked, Suzie moved to get out of bed but stopped short when she realized she was wearing a fresh set of clothes.
That realization made her panic all over again.
She quickly placed a hand on her slightly rounded belly, checking for any unusual sensations. After confirming the babies were safe, she let out a long sigh of relief. But another thought immediately shattered her calm.
She had fallen asleep in Jamie's car. Setting aside the question of who carried her into the manor, who had changed her clothes? It couldn't have been Jamie. But that meant a maid must have seen her pregnant stomach and would have certainly reported it to him.
What should she do? If he found out the babies still existed, would the madman drag her back to the hospital and try to harm them again?
The thought made her heart leap into her throat. This felt even worse than the police station.
As she was guessing, Jamie’s hand gently rested on her shoulder. The unexpected touch made her flinch, and she let out a small gasp.
“What are you screaming for?” Jamie demanded, his brow furrowed as he stared down at her.
He hesitated for a moment before abruptly removing his hand. “If you’ve done nothing wrong, why are you this scared? Hmm?”
His words hung in the air as he slowly sat down beside her.
The moment he moved, Suzie scrambled off the bed. Her feet had barely touched the floor, and she didn't care that there were no slippers to wear as she made a frantic dash for the door.
