The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 129

But when she reached the door, it wouldn't open. It seemed to have been locked from the outside after he entered.

As she fumbled with the handle, a familiar scent drifted into her nostrils, making her heart stop. She didn't need to turn around to know that Jamie was standing right behind her.

In the next instant, an external force sent her stumbling backward, losing her balance. Before she could regain her footing, she had fallen into his arms, his powerful grip securely around her waist.

Suzie struggled, but Jamie's right arm held her firmly in place. Then, to her absolute horror, his large hand slid from her waist to gently rest on her lower abdomen. The warmth of his palm felt like a branding iron against her skin, searing into her very soul.

“Why are you trembling? Are you finally scared?”

Jamie’s voice, like a whisper from hell, curled around her ear, his breath brushing against her neck. His tone was light, but to Suzie, it was filled with terrifying uncertainty.

He knew. He knew the babies were still there.

What was she going to do?

Suzie didn't dare move. She held her breath, trying her best to control the violent trembling of her body. But his hand continued to stroke her belly, wandering gently.

She couldn't read his emotions, couldn't guess his intentions. All she knew was the paralyzing fear that he might suddenly press down and harm her stomach.

The two of them remained locked in a strange, tense standoff. After what felt like an eternity, Suzie heard Jamie's voice again. He patted her belly softly.

Of course. Even if he verified that he had touched her, he still didn't believe the children were his. Which meant he didn't believe she had been faithful.

What had she ever done to make him so convinced she had cheated on him and was carrying another man’s child? Other than lending some money to an old classmate, she hadn't been in contact with any other men. Oliver had only returned to the country when they were getting divorced.

She was sure that, given his suspicious nature, he had already investigated everyone around her. She knew she had nothing to hide, so why did he still refuse to believe her?

Suzie couldn't make sense of it. Though she felt utterly exasperated, she maintained a calm facade and replied simply, “I know.”

She had looked into it. During pregnancy, non-invasive prenatal testing, amniocentesis, or chorionic villus sampling could all be used for a paternity test.
