She had once considered getting a paternity test done herself, just so she could throw the results in Jamie’s face, shut him up, and humiliate him for his accusations. But after she managed to save the babies, she didn't want any more complications or any further connection to him.
Now, his question made it clear that he was already planning to do a test himself. Suzie’s mind flashed with a painful image of Jamie snatching her children away. Even worse, she pictured a future where their stepmother would be Chloe. She imagined her poor, helpless babies suffering under Chloe's cruelty, their lives even more miserable than her own childhood with Margaret.
The thought of these heart-wrenching scenarios made her chest tighten with a suffocating mix of sorrow and dread.
“Jamie, forget the paternity test,” she added, her voice sharp with emotion. “It doesn’t matter. I know you don’t believe me, and even if you did, you’re not taking my children. I would die to protect them. And you, Jamie, you would never love them! So none of this has anything to do with you!”
“What do you mean it has nothing to do with me? What do you mean I wouldn’t love them?”
Jamie cut her off, stepping in front of her. His eyes, sharp as daggers, scanned her face for a few seconds before he spoke again.
“Listen to me carefully, Suzie. If they are mine, I, Jamie, will not allow a child of the Baylor family to be raised elsewhere. But if the test proves they aren't, this time... I will be in the operating room to watch you finish the procedure.”
His words sent a chill down her spine, making it hard to breathe. In just a few seconds, crystalline tears began to stream uncontrollably down her cheeks.
It was true. If she were to truly fight him, she stood no chance, not in any capacity. It wasn't just Jamie. With her trusting nature, even someone like Chloe could easily trap her with a few simple tricks and land her in a police station, completely innocent.
Who could she possibly win against?
What hurt most was hearing him say it plainly—that he would take her children from her. She could no longer hold back the sob rising in her throat.
“Jamie, you may have power, money, and influence, but these children will never love you. Whether you do the test or not, whether you take them or not, they will never love you. Because... you don't deserve it. The moment you first tried to kill them, you lost the right to be loved by them.”
