The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 131

This time, Suzie didn't shout. Her voice was quiet, but a bone-deep chill and sorrow laced every word.

With her eyes glistening with unshed tears, she stared at Jamie, all traces of her previous timidity gone.

The truth about the children was out, and there was nothing she could do about it. Sometimes you fear a secret coming to light more than anything, but once it’s exposed, you realize it’s not the end of the world.

Jamie seemed stunned by her words.

A vein throbbed on his forehead, and his gaze grew sharper, more intense. It was as if his own emotions ran even deeper than hers.

They stood in a tense standoff for a long time until Suzie finally felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her. Even though she had slept soundly, the ordeal from the previous day at the police station had left her body drained.

Seeing that Jamie remained motionless and silent, Suzie spoke first.

“Jamie, let's stop this. The children are mine, and I'll do anything to protect them. We're divorced, so there's no reason for us to be entangled like this anymore. Thank you for bailing me out today. When I'm back on my feet, I'll repay you for this kindness. Please, just have the staff open the door. I want to go home.”

Suzie’s tone was calm and sincere, but Jamie acted as if he hadn't heard a word, remaining perfectly still.

After a brief pause, Suzie moved past him and gripped the doorknob with both hands. She pulled, but just like before, it wouldn't budge.

She began to rattle it relentlessly, the clattering sound echoing through the room and drowning out the complex emotions swirling between them.

After a long moment, she heard Jamie's voice from behind her.

“The door can be opened. But don't even think about leaving.”

The words had barely left his mouth when there was a soft shuffling sound from outside, and the door swung open.

Standing in the doorway was a kind-faced middle-aged woman Suzie had never seen before. She didn't look like a member of the household staff.

The woman gave Jamie a slight bow. “Mr. Baylor, Mrs. Baylor's meal is ready. Shall I bring it in, or would she prefer to dine in the dining room?”

Jamie glanced at Suzie’s silk nightgown and bare feet before instructing in a low voice, “Bring it to the bedroom.”

“Yes, sir.”

After nodding in acknowledgment, the woman turned to Suzie, her tone just as respectful as it had been with Jamie. “Mrs. Baylor, my name is Lucy. From today onward, I will be responsible for your meals and daily care.”
