She had no other choice. Chloe was her only lifeline. If Jamie had given Chloe's company a major contract, she must hold some sway with him. After all, a man of his stature and wealth would hardly be content with just one woman.

Lexi stared at Chloe, her eyes filled with desperate hope.

But Chloe’s next words left her utterly stunned.

“Lexi, we may be friends, but you beat Mrs. Baylor badly enough to leave her face swollen. What exactly do you expect me to do? I warned you yesterday. I told you not to mess with her. But you wouldn't listen. You kept saying you couldn't let it go after she poached your assistant and stole your project. Honestly…”

Lexi’s lips trembled, but no words came out. Chloe! Yesterday, she was the one egging her on, joining in on the insults. And now she was pinning everything on her? Was she trying to wash her hands of her?

They were best friends! After years of friendship, was this how Chloe was going to treat her?

“Chloe…” Lexi whispered her name in disbelief. She took a breath and tried again. “Chloe… that’s not what you said yesterday. You…”

“What did I say? I think you’re just scared and confused,” Chloe interrupted sharply, cutting her off before she could say another word. “I have a record of what I told you yesterday. Look!” She brandished her phone in Lexi’s face. “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and apologize to Mrs. Baylor! Beg for her forgiveness!”

“And I’m not done! I’m going to keep reporting your criminal activities! Josie’s verdict will be announced soon, and your time in jail won’t be far behind! Don’t think you’re safe just because you have Jamie backing you. When you’ve broken the law, not even God himself can save you.”

All traces of Lexi’s earlier humility had vanished. She was screaming at Suzie, her face contorted with a rage so intense it seemed she wanted to devour her whole.

Lexi’s desperate attempt to provoke her only made Suzie more curious. What had Chloe shown her?
