Chloe’s brow twitched. She glanced at Jamie, who was smoking in the distance, then turned her gaze back to Suzie, a serene smile spreading across her face.
“You’re too kind, Mrs. Baylor,” she said sweetly as she stood up, her voice just loud enough to carry a hint of smug triumph. “I sleep very well, thank you.”
Suzie’s eyes darkened, her response sharp. “Chloe, the law has a long reach. Do you really think you’ve gotten away with this?”
Without waiting for a reply, Suzie turned and walked over to Mia, who had been standing silently this whole time. She took her hand and led her to the restroom.
“Suzie…” The moment the door closed behind them, Mia squeezed Suzie’s hand tightly, her voice choked with emotion.
Suzie gently patted her arm. “It’s okay, Mia. Don’t worry, I’m fine now.”
She locked the door before adding, “You were the one who contacted Jamie, weren't you?”
Mia wiped away tears of joy. “Yes. Suzie, I knew you would never do something so malicious. I wanted to help, but I don’t know anyone powerful. I had no other choice, so I thought of Mr. Baylor. I figured, even if you’re divorced, you once loved each other and lived together. Besides, from everything I’ve seen in the news, he doesn’t seem like a heartless person. I was sure he wouldn’t just ignore you when you were in trouble.”
Mia sounded completely sincere. She truly believed Jamie was a decent man.
Suzie's words brought Mia immense relief, and she nodded quickly. “That’s good. Suzie… you have no idea. When I went to the hospital, I couldn’t even get to your floor. The bodyguards at the elevator just turned me away. I had to be brave and disguise myself as a nurse to finally get in…”
Mia vividly described her encounter with Jamie, but she stopped abruptly mid-sentence and looked at Suzie seriously.
“Suzie… my heart was pounding when I went. I was so worried he might just throw me out. But when I finished telling him what happened to you, his face, which had been so calm, became absolutely furious.”
“And just now, watching how attentive he was to you… I can hardly believe you two are divorced. Suzie, he looks completely in love with you. Anyone can see it…”
