The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 150

And so, Chloe was embraced by the Baylor family as their son’s savior, basking in the glow of their gratitude and favor. She was completely blindsided when, during a brief period of studying abroad, Jamie suddenly married Suzie—a girl from a poor family with nothing to her name. Chloe had been forced to rush back home.

As the memory faded, a sharp pain lanced through Chloe's heart. She had tried to leverage her 'hero' status to secure a marriage with Jamie before, but it had never worked. Now, having created this mess for herself, she was forced to dredge up the past once more, hoping the memory of her “life-saving grace” would earn her another chance.

Her thoughts drifted back to the present, and she looked at Jamie with mournful eyes. His expression had softened slightly, but his gaze was still fixed on the pendant.

Perhaps her story had rekindled his gratitude. Seeing a sliver of hope, Chloe pressed on. “It was on the way up the mountain, while I was carrying you, that I lost this necklace. Later, you sent so many bodyguards to help me search for it all night. You never saw it back then, but… isn’t it beautiful?”

She gestured to the pendant still clutched in Jamie's hand. “Jamie… why were you so surprised when you saw it?”

A small frown creased Jamie’s brow. He ignored her narrative and cut to the chase. “Where did the necklace come from?”

Chloe paused. “I’m not sure,” she replied. “I’ve had it since I was a little girl. I never asked my mother about its history.”

Her lips trembled as a chaotic storm of thoughts gave her a splitting headache. With great effort, she managed to calm herself enough to think about her current predicament. His words implied that if she had just left Suzie alone, he would have continued to treat her with the gentle respect owed to a savior. Even if he felt no romantic love for her, he had always afforded her dignity and status.

Most of the attention she enjoyed had come from his name and status. He had indeed repaid the debt of her saving his life.

And yet… what had she done that was so wrong? Lexi was already furious with Suzie. Chloe had just given the situation a little nudge, a chance to finally push that irritating woman into the mud where she belonged.
