Suzie was silent. Jamie's suggestive words sent a jolt of panic through her. A hot blush spread across her cheeks, burning hotter by the second. She didn't dare move, knowing his temperament all too well. He was a man of his word, and he would absolutely follow through on his threats.
The irony was suffocating. She had never sat on his lap like this, held so intimately in his arms, during their entire two-year marriage. They had never shared a single suggestive word or touch.
Now, tangled in this complicated mess, she couldn't even tell who the other woman was anymore—was it her, or was it Chloe?
At the thought of Chloe, a torrent of emotion surged through Suzie, cold and furious.
"Let go of me."
Her voice was laced with ice, seeming to drop the temperature in the room by several degrees.
Jamie simply arched an eyebrow. With his injured hand, he slowly, almost gracefully, lifted her chin, his touch gentle as if he were admiring a precious work of art. His deep, penetrating gaze locked onto the delicate, pale features of the woman in his arms.
"And if I don't?" he murmured, his voice a low, magnetic hum. The simple words carried an undeniable finality.
Forced to look at him, Suzie felt his thumb gently stroking her chin. With every word he spoke, the faint, warm scent of tobacco washed over her face and neck. Her heart began to pound again, but she fought to keep her expression neutral, refusing to show any sign of her inner turmoil.
She stared back at him, her eyes hard. "Jamie, you really need to see a therapist."
When she finally felt like she could breathe again, she spoke, her voice even. "Whether you believe me or not doesn't matter to me anymore."
Her words seemed to anger him. The fingers on her chin tightened their grip.
"It doesn't matter? Then what does matter to you?" His voice turned cold, edged with displeasure.
Suzie quickly twisted her head away, trying to escape his hold as she answered.
